Can this be true? Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) using solar energy???

i was walking along on Spadina st today after having brunch with friends and saw this solar panel on Spadina / king st . this is the 1st time i notice it, when i asked my friend whom worked in the area he said the solar panel was for the TTC street card...

can this be true the TTC had gone green under our noise? i went on the TTC website but couldnt find any Press Release.

i did how ever found this a report STATION MODERNIZATION PROGRAM  for PAPE STATION May 21, 2008

it stated:

“a) The possibility of having solar panels included as part of the Pape Station  Modernization Project.....

Staff have met with a major solar panel manufacturer to explore its potential to supply electrical power to TTC facilities.  Due to the current payback period of well over 10 years, it is concluded that it is not practical to install solar panels at the present time to supply electricity to large electrical loads.......”

i wonder if this is the TTC solar panel or it belongs to someone else ...

if you know anything about this, drop me a line....

it would be cool if the TTC really did go green....

up date: a TTC driver ( David Mulgrew ) wrote and informed me “The solar panel is for running the greaser. If you look down at the streetcar tracks close to there you'll see goop seeping out onto the rails.Rather then use water to help make turns less 'screechy', they now use grease. Which is great until the streetcar needs to stop in a hurry... If you have ever been on a streetcar that goes sliding right on out of Dundas West station, thats why.”
